What his brothers thought at first: THEY DID NOT BELIEVE IN HIM
His verdict at the Jerusalem council: WE SHOULD NOT TROUBLE THE GENTILES
The subject was a brother of the Lord who, during Jesus's earthly ministry, did not believe in Him. But after the resurrection the risen Lord appeared to him, and he became a devoted servant of Christ.
He rose to lead the church at Jerusalem and was reckoned, with Peter and John, a pillar of the church. Paul consulted him, and deferred to his standing among the believers.
At the council of Jerusalem, when the question arose whether Gentile believers must keep the law of Moses, the subject gave the deciding word, that they should not be troubled with such a burden, but keep to a few necessary things.
He wrote the epistle that bears his name, a letter of practical wisdom urging that faith without works is dead, that the tongue be bridled, and that trials be counted as joy.
Known for his devotion and prayer, the subject was called the Just. Tradition holds that he was at last put to death for his witness to Christ, faithful to the end as leader of the mother church.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Unbelief can turn to devoted faith when we truly meet the risen Christ.
- Real faith proves itself in works, not in words alone.
- Wise leaders lift burdens off others rather than laying them on.
