His oath to the fleeing king: WHEREVER MY LORD THE KING SHALL BE, THERE WILL YOUR SERVANT BE
What David gave into his hand: COMMAND OF A THIRD OF THE ARMY
The subject was a Gittite, a foreigner from the Philistine city of Gath, newly come to David with six hundred men when Absalom's revolt drove the king from Jerusalem.
As David fled, he urged the subject to turn back and stay with the new king, saying he was an exile from his own place and should not wander in uncertainty with him. Why should he go up and down with them?
The subject answered with an oath: as the LORD lives and as the king lives, wherever the king may be, in death or in life, there also would his servant be. He would not be turned back.
So David let him pass over the brook Kidron with all his men and their little ones, and set him among the leaders of the army.
When the battle with Absalom came, David divided the army in three and gave a third into the hand of the subject, trusting a former stranger with the fate of his throne. A foreigner's loyalty outshone the treachery of a son.
