Whose army he first led: ABSALOM'S, AGAINST HIS OWN KING
How Joab killed him: GRABBED HIS BEARD TO KISS HIM, THEN STRUCK
The subject was a nephew of David, son of David's sister Abigail. During Absalom's revolt he was made commander of the rebel army against his uncle the king.
After Absalom's defeat, David, seeking to win over Judah and to replace the ruthless Joab, offered the subject the command of his own army, and the men of Judah were swayed to the king's side.
When Sheba son of Bichri raised a new revolt, David sent the subject to muster Judah, but he delayed, and Joab and the troops went out to pursue Sheba.
At the great stone in Gibeon, Joab met the subject, took him by the beard with his right hand as if to kiss him, and with the sword in his other hand struck him in the belly, spilling his entrails on the ground, and he died.
The subject lay wallowing in his blood in the highway, and the troops halted until he was carried aside and covered. David never forgot this murder of an innocent commander, and charged Solomon to requite Joab for the blood he had shed in peace.

- A friendly greeting can mask a murderous heart; guard against false peace.
- God takes account of innocent blood, and it is repaid in His time.
