The cry he sounded through Israel: WE HAVE NO PORTION IN DAVID; EVERY MAN TO HIS TENTS, O ISRAEL
How the siege of Abel ended: THE WISE WOMAN HAD HIS HEAD THROWN OVER THE WALL
As David returned to Jerusalem after Absalom's revolt, a dispute broke out between the men of Judah and the men of Israel over the king. Into this quarrel stepped the subject, a worthless man of Benjamin, son of Bichri.
He blew the trumpet and cried that Israel had no portion in David, no inheritance in the son of Jesse, and called every man to his tent. So all the men of Israel deserted David to follow him, though the men of Judah held fast.
David sent Amasa to muster Judah, but when Amasa delayed, Joab took the field, treacherously killed Amasa in the road, and pursued the subject northward to the city of Abel of Beth-maacah, where he was besieged.
As Joab's men battered the wall, a wise woman of the city called out and asked why he would destroy a mother city in Israel. Joab answered that he sought only one man, the subject, who had lifted his hand against the king.
The woman went to her people with her wisdom, and they cut off the head of the subject and threw it over the wall to Joab. He blew the trumpet, the army withdrew, and the revolt died with its author.
