The meaning of the name the angel gave: GOD HAS HEARD YOUR AFFLICTION
God's word to Hagar of her son: A GREAT NATION I WILL MAKE OF HIM
The subject was born to Abraham by Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's servant, when Sarah despaired of bearing a child. The angel of the LORD found the fleeing Hagar and told her to name the boy Ishmael, for the LORD had heard her affliction.
God promised Abraham to bless the subject and make him fruitful, the father of twelve princes and a great nation; yet He established His covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah would bear the following year.
At the weaning feast of Isaac, the subject was seen mocking, and Sarah demanded that the bondwoman and her son be cast out. The matter was grievous to Abraham, but God told him to do as Sarah said, for in Isaac his offspring would be named.
Sent away with bread and a skin of water, Hagar and the subject wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. When the water was gone she wept, but God heard the boy, opened her eyes to a well, and was with the lad as he grew.
The subject dwelt in the wilderness of Paran and became an archer; he fathered twelve princes as God had said and lived a hundred and thirty-seven years. Later Scripture takes him as a figure of the son born according to the flesh.
