What David sent him back to do: DEFEAT THE COUNSEL OF AHITHOPHEL
Why his weaker advice prevailed: THE LORD HAD ORDAINED TO BRING DISASTER ON ABSALOM
The subject was the Archite, called the friend of David. When Absalom's revolt drove the king from Jerusalem, the subject came to meet him with torn clothes and dust on his head, ready to share his exile.
David sent him back into the city, telling him he would be a burden in flight but of great use if he returned to Absalom and pretended loyalty, that he might defeat the counsel of Ahithophel.
So the subject went to Absalom, professing to serve whomever the LORD and the people chose. When Ahithophel counseled a swift strike against the weary David, which would have succeeded, Absalom also called for the subject's advice.
The subject argued instead for a great, cautious gathering of all Israel with Absalom himself at its head, painting David and his men as fierce and hidden, and his counsel seemed good to Absalom and the elders.
For the LORD had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, in order to bring disaster on Absalom. The subject sent word to David to cross the Jordan by night, and so the king was warned and delivered.
