How his counsel was esteemed: AS IF ONE INQUIRED OF THE WORD OF GOD
The prayer against his advice: O LORD, TURN HIS COUNSEL INTO FOOLISHNESS
The subject was David's counselor, a man of Giloh, whose advice in those days was esteemed as though one had inquired of the word of God. Both David and Absalom held his counsel in the highest regard.
When Absalom conspired against his father, the subject joined the revolt, and the conspiracy grew strong. David, fleeing Jerusalem, prayed that the LORD would turn the counsel of the subject into foolishness.
The subject advised Absalom to let him pursue David at once with a chosen force while the king was weary, to strike him alone and bring the people back. The counsel was sound and would have succeeded.
But David's friend Hushai, sent back to frustrate the plan, urged instead a great gathering of all Israel with Absalom himself leading, and his counsel was preferred, for the LORD had ordained to defeat the good counsel of the subject.
When the subject saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey, went home to his city, set his house in order, and hanged himself, and was buried in the tomb of his father. His betrayal became a picture of the friend who lifts his heel against a trusted companion.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- The wisest counsel is worthless when it serves betrayal instead of loyalty.
- God can turn the shrewdest advice into foolishness to protect His anointed.
- A gifted mind without a faithful heart ends in despair.
