Who stood with him on the hill: AARON ON ONE SIDE, HUR ON THE OTHER
Left in charge with Aaron: WHOEVER HAS A DISPUTE, LET HIM GO TO THEM
The subject stood among the elders of Israel in the wilderness and is first named at Rephidim, where Israel fought Amalek while Moses watched from the hilltop with the staff of God in his hand.
As long as Moses held up his hands Israel prevailed, but when they grew heavy and fell, Amalek prevailed. So the subject and Aaron set a stone under Moses and held up his hands, one on each side, until the sun set and the battle was won.
When Moses ascended the mountain to receive the law, he left the elders below and charged Aaron and the subject with the people, saying that whoever had a dispute should go to them.
The record and later tradition connect the subject to the house of Judah and Caleb, and name him grandfather of Bezalel, the craftsman who would build the tabernacle.
The subject appears without fanfare, a steadying hand beside the leader God had chosen, faithful in the unseen work of holding another up.
