How they treated the LORD's offerings: TOOK THE MEAT BY FORCE, DESPISING IT
What befell them and the ark in one day: BOTH KILLED, AND THE ARK CAPTURED
The two were sons of Eli the priest, but they were worthless men who did not know the LORD. They treated the offerings of the LORD with contempt, seizing the meat by force before the fat was burned, and they lay with the women who served at the entrance of the tent.
The people's regard for the offering of the LORD suffered because of them, and their sin was very great in His sight.
Eli rebuked them weakly, but they would not listen, and a man of God came with a word of judgment: both sons would die on the same day, and the priesthood would pass from Eli's house.
When Israel went to war with the Philistines and was defeated, the elders sent to Shiloh for the ark of the covenant, and the two brothers went with it, treating it as a charm rather than reverencing the LORD.
Israel was routed, thirty thousand fell, the ark of God was captured, and both brothers were killed on the same day. When Eli heard, he fell and died, and the glory departed from Israel, for the ark of God was taken.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Those who serve holy things carelessly bring reproach on the Lord's name.
- No sacred object can be used as a charm to force God's blessing.
- Persistent, unrepentant sin in leaders invites the judgment God has warned of.
