What he taught the boy to say: SPEAK, LORD, FOR YOUR SERVANT HEARS
Why judgment fell on his house: HIS SONS BLASPHEMED AND HE DID NOT RESTRAIN THEM
The subject was priest and judge at Shiloh, where the tabernacle stood. When Hannah prayed there in bitter silence for a child, he first mistook her for drunk, then blessed her, and God granted her Samuel.
When the weaned child was brought to serve the LORD, the subject took him under his care and taught him to minister before the LORD.
His own sons, priests, were corrupt, treating the LORD's offerings with contempt. The subject rebuked them weakly but did not restrain them, and a man of God foretold judgment on his house.
When the LORD called the boy Samuel in the night, the subject perceived it was the LORD and told him to answer, Speak, LORD, for your servant hears; so Samuel received his first prophecy.
In old age and nearly blind, the subject heard that Israel was defeated, his sons killed, and the ark of God captured. At that word he fell backward, and being old and heavy, he died.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Honoring our children above God dishonors the LORD who gave them.
- A weak hand with sin at home undoes a lifetime of service.
- Restraining evil is part of any true stewardship.
