What he did to please the people: KILLED JAMES AND ARRESTED PETER
The shout he accepted as his own: THE VOICE OF A GOD, NOT OF A MAN
The subject was a grandson of Herod the Great who ruled over Judea. He laid violent hands on the church, and had James the brother of John put to death with the sword.
Seeing that this pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also, intending to bring him out for public trial after the Passover, and held him under heavy guard.
But the church prayed earnestly, and an angel of the Lord came in the night, struck Peter awake, and led him out through the iron gate that opened of its own accord, delivering him from the subject's hand.
Enraged that Peter had escaped, the subject examined the guards and ordered them put to death, then went down to Caesarea.
On an appointed day, robed in royal splendor, he delivered an oration, and the people shouted that it was the voice of a god and not of a man. Because he accepted their worship and did not give God the glory, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died; but the word of God increased and multiplied.
