The subject was a Roman centurion of the Italian Cohort stationed at Caesarea, a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously, and prayed continually.
An angel appeared to him in a vision, telling him his prayers and alms had risen as a memorial before God, and directing him to send for Simon Peter in Joppa.
At the same time Peter received a vision of a sheet let down from heaven and a voice saying not to call unclean what God had made clean, preparing him to go to a Gentile's house.
Peter came and preached that God shows no partiality and that everyone who believes receives forgiveness through Jesus. As he spoke, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard.
The believers who came with Peter were amazed that the Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles, and the subject and his household were baptized, the door of faith opened to the nations.
