The promise over Ishmael: I WILL MAKE HIM A GREAT NATION
The subject, an Egyptian servant of Sarah, was given to Abraham to bear a child when Sarah remained barren. When she conceived and looked with contempt on her mistress, and was dealt with harshly, she fled into the wilderness.
The angel of the LORD found her by a spring, called her by name, and told her to return, promising that her offspring would be too many to count, and that her son would be named Ishmael, for the LORD had listened to her affliction.
The subject called the LORD who spoke to her the God who sees, marveling that she had truly seen Him who sees her. So the well was named Beer-lahai-roi.
Years later, after Isaac was born, the subject and Ishmael were sent away and wandered in the desert of Beersheba until the water was gone, and she wept, unable to watch the boy die.
God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of the LORD called to her, opened her eyes to a well of water, and renewed the promise to make of Ishmael a great nation.
