What the unclean spirit answered its name: MY NAME IS LEGION, FOR WE ARE MANY
What Jesus told him to do: GO HOME TO YOUR FRIENDS AND TELL THEM HOW MUCH THE LORD HAS DONE FOR YOU
When Jesus crossed the sea to the country of the Gerasenes, He was met at once by a man with an unclean spirit who lived among the tombs. No one could bind him anymore, for he had torn apart every chain and shackle.
Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he cried out and cut himself with stones. Seeing Jesus from afar, he ran and fell before Him, and the spirit cried out not to be tormented.
Jesus asked its name, and it answered Legion, for they were many, and begged not to be sent out of the country. A great herd of pigs was feeding nearby, and the demons begged to enter them.
Jesus gave them leave, and the unclean spirits entered the swine. The herd, about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned. The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and countryside.
The people came and found the man clothed and in his right mind, sitting at the feet of Jesus, and they were afraid and begged Him to leave. The man wanted to go with Him, but Jesus sent him home to proclaim what the Lord had done, and he told it throughout the Decapolis, and all marveled.
