What made him afraid as Paul spoke: RIGHTEOUSNESS, SELF-CONTROL, AND THE JUDGMENT TO COME
How he put off the decision: GO AWAY FOR NOW, I WILL CALL YOU LATER
The subject was the Roman governor of Judea before whom Paul was brought after his arrest in Jerusalem, accused by the high priest and an orator named Tertullus.
Paul made his defense, and the subject, having a fairly accurate knowledge of the Way, adjourned the case, keeping Paul in custody but granting him some liberty and access to his friends.
He sent for Paul often and listened to him, and as Paul reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, the subject was alarmed and said, Go away for now; when I have an opportunity I will summon you.
Yet his fear did not lead to faith. He hoped Paul would offer him money, and so kept sending for him and conversing with him.
Two years passed, and when the subject was succeeded by Festus, wishing to do the Jews a favor, he left Paul in prison, a man who felt the truth and trembled at it, but never yielded to it.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- To feel the truth and tremble is not the same as obeying it.
- There is no more convenient season than now to answer God's call.
- Delaying decision for gain or favor hardens the heart against grace.
