The subject was a brother of James and, like him, a brother of the Lord who came to serve Him. He calls himself simply a servant of Jesus Christ, not presuming on his kinship.
He set out to write to the believers about their common salvation, but found it needful instead to urge them to contend earnestly for the faith once for all delivered to the saints.
For certain ungodly people had crept in unnoticed, perverting the grace of God into sensuality and denying the Lord, and the subject warned of the judgment that had fallen on the disobedient of old.
He called the faithful to build themselves up in their holy faith, to pray in the Holy Spirit, to keep themselves in the love of God, and to show mercy to those who doubt, snatching some from the fire.
He closed with a doxology to the One who is able to keep them from stumbling and present them blameless before His glory with great joy, to the only God our Savior be glory and majesty.
