His set purpose: TO STUDY, TO DO, AND TO TEACH THE LAW
What the people did at his reading: THEY WEPT AS THEY HEARD THE WORDS
The subject was a priest and a scribe skilled in the Law of Moses, descended from Aaron. He had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach its statutes in Israel.
With the decree of the Persian king, the subject led a company of exiles up from Babylon to Jerusalem. He proclaimed a fast at the river Ahava, ashamed to ask the king for an escort, and trusted the good hand of God upon them for the journey.
Arriving safely, the subject grieved over those who had broken faith by intermarriage against the covenant. He tore his garment, fell on his knees, and confessed the people's sin, and they made a covenant to put things right.
At the assembly the subject stood on a wooden platform and read from the Book of the Law from morning until midday, and the Levites gave the sense, so the people understood the reading.
The people wept as they heard the words, but were told the day was holy; the joy of the LORD was their strength. Under the subject the written covenant was restored to a returned and repentant people.
