Remarks:

The subject, a Jew of the exile in Susa, raised his orphaned cousin Esther as his own daughter, and she was taken into the harem of King Ahasuerus and made queen.

Sitting at the king's gate, he uncovered a plot against the king's life and had it recorded, an act unrewarded at the time but not forgotten.

When he refused to bow to the proud official Haman, Haman secured a decree to destroy all the Jews. The subject urged Esther to plead with the king, saying she may have come to royalty for such a time as this.

In a turn of providence the king honored the subject for exposing the earlier plot, and Haman was hanged on the very gallows he had built for him.

The subject was raised to be second in the empire, and a new decree let the Jews defend themselves. The feast of Purim was established to remember the deliverance.
