What he traded for a single meal: HIS BIRTHRIGHT AS THE FIRSTBORN
His cry when the blessing was gone: BLESS ME, EVEN ME ALSO, O MY FATHER
The subject was the elder of Isaac's twin sons, born red and hairy, a skillful hunter and a man of the open field, loved by his father; his brother Jacob was a quiet man loved by Rebekah. An oracle had said the elder would serve the younger.
Coming in famished from the field, the subject sold his birthright to Jacob for bread and a bowl of lentil stew, eating and going his way. Thus he despised his birthright.
When Isaac was old and blind, Jacob, at Rebekah's urging, disguised himself and took the blessing of the firstborn. The subject returned to find it gone, and cried out with a great and bitter cry, but the blessing could not be recalled.
The subject hated Jacob for this and purposed to kill him after their father's death, so Jacob fled to Paddan-aram. Years later, when Jacob returned in fear, the subject ran to meet him, embraced him, and wept, and they were reconciled.
The subject settled in the hill country of Seir and became Edom, father of a nation. Later Scripture holds him a warning against the profane, who for a single meal sold what could not be bought back with tears.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Do not trade an eternal birthright for a moment's appetite.
- Tears cannot always recover what a careless choice throws away.
- Even old enmity can end in embrace and reconciliation.
