Why Jacob crossed his hands: THE YOUNGER WOULD BECOME GREATER
The blessing spoken over him: GOD MAKE YOU AS EPHRAIM AND MANASSEH
The subject was the younger son of Joseph, born in Egypt to Asenath before the years of famine. His name means fruitful, for God had made Joseph fruitful in the land of his affliction.
When Jacob was old and near death, Joseph brought his two sons to be blessed, setting Manasseh the elder at Jacob's right hand and the subject at his left.
But Jacob crossed his hands, laying his right hand on the subject's head, and when Joseph objected, his father refused, saying the elder would be great, but the younger would be greater, and his offspring would become a multitude of nations.
So Jacob blessed them, saying that by them Israel would pronounce blessings: God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh, and he set the subject before Manasseh.
The tribe of the subject grew strong and numerous, taking a leading place among the northern tribes, so that in later days the whole northern kingdom was sometimes called by his name.

- A name given in a season of affliction can become a byword for blessing.
