What he said of their dashed hope: WE HAD HOPED THAT HE WAS THE ONE TO REDEEM ISRAEL
When they finally knew Him: THEIR EYES WERE OPENED IN THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD
On the day of the resurrection the subject and another disciple were walking to the village of Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, talking sadly of all that had happened to Jesus.
Jesus Himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing Him. He asked what they were discussing, and the subject, astonished, asked if He was the only visitor to Jerusalem who did not know the things that had taken place.
They told of Jesus of Nazareth, mighty in deed and word, whom the rulers had crucified, adding that they had hoped He was the one to redeem Israel, and that some women had found His tomb empty.
Then, beginning with Moses and all the prophets, Jesus opened to them the Scriptures concerning Himself. As they drew near the village they urged Him to stay, for evening was near.
At the table He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him, and He vanished. They said their hearts had burned within them on the road, and they rose that same hour and returned to tell the eleven that the Lord had risen indeed.
