His counsel to the council: BETTER ONE MAN DIE FOR THE PEOPLE
The charge on which he condemned Him: YOU HAVE HEARD HIS BLASPHEMY
The subject was high priest in the year of the Lord's death, son-in-law of Annas the former high priest, and a leader of the party that sought to destroy Jesus.
When the council feared that the whole nation would follow Jesus after the raising of Lazarus, the subject said it was better that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.
He did not say this of his own accord; being high priest that year, he prophesied without knowing it that Jesus would die for the nation, and not for the nation only, but to gather into one the scattered children of God.
At the night trial the subject questioned Jesus, and when the Lord confessed that He was the Christ, the Son of God, who would come on the clouds of heaven, the subject tore his robes and cried blasphemy.
On this charge the council condemned Him worthy of death and handed Him over to Pilate. The subject meant only to be rid of a threat, yet his words pointed to the very atonement his own sacrifices had foreshadowed.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Guarding position and power can blind even a religious leader to God.
- God can speak truth through the mouth of one who means only evil.
- The death plotted against Christ became the salvation of the world.
