Why Jesus was brought to him first: HE WAS THE FATHER-IN-LAW OF CAIAPHAS, THE HIGH PRIEST THAT YEAR
What Jesus answered his questioning: I HAVE SPOKEN OPENLY; WHY DO YOU ASK ME? ASK THOSE WHO HEARD
The subject had served as high priest and remained the dominant figure of the priestly house long after, with five sons and a son-in-law who held the office in turn. Though Caiaphas was high priest that year, the subject still wielded the real power.
When Jesus was seized in the garden, the band of soldiers bound Him and led Him first to the subject, who questioned Him about His disciples and His teaching before sending Him on to Caiaphas.
Jesus answered that He had spoken openly to the world, teaching in the synagogues and the temple where the Jews gathered, and had said nothing in secret. He told the subject to ask those who had heard Him what He said.
For this an officer standing by struck Jesus with his hand, demanding whether He would answer the high priest so. Jesus replied that if He had spoken wrongly, let them bear witness to the wrong, but if rightly, why strike Him?
The subject then sent Him bound to Caiaphas. Years later he is named again, presiding with the priestly rulers who examined Peter and John for preaching the resurrection, an old guardian of a corrupted office who set himself against the Lord and His witnesses.
