His blessing over Ruth: THE LORD REPAY YOU, UNDER WHOSE WINGS YOU HAVE COME
How he sealed the redemption: THE REMOVING OF A SANDAL AT THE GATE
The subject, a worthy man of Bethlehem and a kinsman of Elimelech, noticed Ruth the Moabitess gleaning in his field and showed her favor, ordering his workers to leave grain for her and to let her be unharmed.
He blessed her for her loyalty to Naomi, saying that she had come to take refuge under the wings of the LORD, the God of Israel.
At Naomi's counsel Ruth appealed to the subject as a kinsman-redeemer. He acknowledged the duty but noted a nearer kinsman who had first right.
At the town gate the subject settled the matter publicly. The nearer redeemer declined, and by the custom of the sandal the subject redeemed the land of Elimelech and took Ruth as his wife.
The subject and Ruth bore Obed, the father of Jesse, the father of David. A redeemer of Bethlehem stands in the ancestry of the Redeemer born there.
