Remarks:

The subject was a disciple of John the Baptist. When John pointed to Jesus as the Lamb of God, the subject followed him, stayed with him, and became the first of the apostles to be called.

The subject at once sought his brother Simon, saying, We have found the Messiah, and brought him to Jesus. From their nets the two were later called to become fishers of men.

When a great crowd was hungry, it was the subject who noticed the boy with five barley loaves and two fish, though he wondered what they were among so many. Christ multiplied them to feed the multitude.

When certain Greeks wished to see Jesus, they came to Philip, and the subject and Philip brought word to the Lord, a sign of the gospel reaching beyond Israel.

The subject is named among the apostles gathered after the ascension. By tradition he carried the gospel to distant lands and was martyred for his witness.
