What the LORD demands: LET JUSTICE ROLL DOWN LIKE WATERS
His answer to the priest: I WAS NO PROPHET, BUT A HERDSMAN
The subject was a shepherd of Tekoa and a dresser of sycamore figs, not trained among the prophets, when the LORD took him from following the flock and sent him to prophesy to Israel.
He pronounced judgment first on the surrounding nations, then turned the word against Israel and Judah, condemning those who sold the righteous for silver and trampled the poor.
He denounced empty worship, declaring that the LORD hated their feasts and would not accept their offerings, and called instead for justice to roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
In visions he saw a plumb line set against the people and a basket of summer fruit signifying that the end had come. Amaziah the priest of Bethel opposed him and told him to flee to Judah.
The subject answered that he was no prophet by trade but had been called by the LORD. He closed with a promise of restoration: the fallen booth of David would be raised up again.
