His enacted sign: GO, TAKE A WIFE, AND LOVE HER AGAIN
The LORD's plea: HOW CAN I GIVE YOU UP, O EPHRAIM
The subject was commanded to marry Gomer, a woman who would prove unfaithful, so that his own marriage would become a living picture of the LORD's covenant with a wayward Israel.
His children were given signs for names, declaring judgment and estrangement: Not Pitied and Not My People, warnings of what Israel's unfaithfulness would bring.
When his wife went after other lovers, the subject was told to go again and love her, and to buy her back, as the LORD still loved Israel though they turned to other gods.
The subject proclaimed that God desired steadfast love and the knowledge of God rather than sacrifice, and warned of the exile that Assyria would bring.
Yet he held out mercy: the LORD asking, How can I give you up, O Ephraim? and promising that Not My People would again be called children of the living God.
