What he foolishly did after beating Edom: SET UP THEIR GODS AND WORSHIPED THEM
The prophet's warning he refused to hear: GOD HAS DETERMINED TO DESTROY YOU
The subject, king of Judah, did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, yet not with a whole heart. He executed the murderers of his father Joash, but according to the law spared their children.
He mustered Judah for war against Edom, and at a prophet's word dismissed the hired troops of Israel, trusting the LORD to give the victory, and he struck down the Edomites in the Valley of Salt.
But he brought back the gods of the people of Seir, set them up as his own, bowed to them, and burned incense to them, worshiping the very idols that had not saved their own people from his hand.
A prophet came asking why he sought gods that could not deliver their nation, and the subject silenced him, threatening him; and the prophet warned that God had determined to destroy him for this.
Lifted up with pride, the subject challenged Israel to battle and was soundly defeated, captured, and his city walls broken down. At the last a conspiracy rose against him, and he was pursued to Lachish and killed.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- To serve gods you have seen fail is the height of folly and unbelief.
- A heart divided between the LORD and idols will not stand.
- Pride after victory blinds a person to the counsel that would save him.
