The subject prophesied in the days of the kings of Judah, contemporary with Isaiah, bringing the LORD's word against both Samaria and Jerusalem for the sins of their leaders.
He denounced rulers who despised justice, prophets who spoke for pay, and heads who built Zion with bloodshed, and foretold that Jerusalem would become a heap of ruins.
Yet he saw beyond judgment to a day when the mountain of the LORD's house would be established, and the nations would beat their swords into plowshares and learn war no more.
He foretold that from Bethlehem Ephrathah, small among the clans of Judah, would come forth a ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient days.
He summed up true religion in a single call: the LORD requires you to do justice, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
