What he wished God would do to Job: OPEN HIS LIPS AND SHOW JOB HIS GUILT
God's verdict on his speeches: YOU HAVE NOT SPOKEN RIGHTLY, AS MY SERVANT JOB
The subject was the Naamathite, the third and bluntest of the friends who came to comfort Job and then joined the long argument over his suffering.
He spoke sharply, saying that Job talked too much, and wishing that God would open His lips against him, for God, he claimed, was even now exacting less than Job's guilt deserved.
He described the deep things of God as beyond finding out, and urged Job to put away the sin he supposed was hidden, promising that then his life would be brighter than noonday.
In his second speech he painted the sure and terrible ruin of the wicked, whose triumph is brief and whose swallowed riches are vomited up, plainly aiming it all at Job.
Though he praised God's greatness, he wronged an innocent man with cruel certainty. At the end the LORD rebuked the subject with the others for not speaking rightly of Him, and they were spared only through the offerings they brought and the prayer of Job on their behalf.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Zeal for God's honor, without understanding, can crush a hurting soul.
- Assuming the worst of a sufferer is a failure of both truth and love.
- We may need the prayers of those we have wronged to be restored.
