Pledge held against the debt: SEAL, CORD, AND STAFF
Judah's verdict upon the evidence: SHE IS MORE RIGHTEOUS THAN I
The subject was given to Er, firstborn of Judah, as wife. Er was wicked in the sight of the LORD and was put to death, leaving her a widow without an heir.
By the custom of the household she was given to Onan, that he might raise up seed for his brother. Onan refused the duty and was also put to death; the subject was sent back to her father's house as a widow, Shelah being withheld from her.
When the appointed son was not given and the season for it had passed, the subject veiled herself and sat at the road to Timnah. Judah, not knowing her, took her as a harlot and left as pledge his seal, his cord, and his staff.
Three months on, Judah was told his daughter-in-law was with child by harlotry and ordered her burned. She sent out the pledge with the word, "By the man to whom these belong I am with child." Judah acknowledged them and said, "She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to Shelah."
The subject bore twins; Perez broke forth first, though Zerah's hand came out before him. Through Perez the line ran on to Boaz, to David, and at length to the Christ, and later witnesses name her among the mothers of the Messiah.
