Whom they feared more than the king: THEY FEARED GOD
How God rewarded their courage: HE GAVE THEM HOUSEHOLDS OF THEIR OWN
The two were midwives to the Hebrew women in Egypt, named Shiphrah and Puah, when Pharaoh sought to crush the growing people of Israel through forced labor and death.
Pharaoh commanded them that when they helped a Hebrew woman give birth, if it was a son they should kill him, but if a daughter, let her live.
But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them; they let the boys live.
When Pharaoh summoned them to demand why, they answered that the Hebrew women were vigorous and gave birth before the midwife could come to them.
Because they feared God more than the king, God dealt well with them, and the people multiplied and grew very strong; and because the midwives feared Him, He gave them families of their own.
