Noah's blessing over him: BLESSED BE THE LORD, THE GOD OF SHEM
The subject was a son of Noah, one of the eight souls carried safely through the flood in the ark when the waters covered the earth.
When Noah planted a vineyard, drank of the wine, and lay uncovered in his tent, the subject and his brother Japheth took a garment, walked in backward, and covered their father without looking on his shame.
For this Noah blessed the subject, saying, Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem, and marking his line as the one through which the LORD would be known.
From the subject came Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, and the peoples of the near world, and through Arphaxad the line ran on to Eber, Peleg, and at length to Abraham.
He lived six hundred years after the flood. The genealogies trace the promise through him, so that the Christ is named a son of Shem, a son of Noah, a son of Adam.
