Remarks:

The subject, a Hebrew of Hebrews and a Roman citizen of Tarsus, was trained under Gamaliel as a Pharisee. He was a zealous persecutor of the early church and consented to the death of the witness Stephen.

En route to Damascus to arrest believers, the subject was confronted by the risen Christ in a light from heaven. Blinded for three days, he was restored and baptized, and commissioned as an apostle to the Gentiles.

The subject undertook extended journeys across Asia Minor and Greece, planting churches and writing letters that were received as Scripture. He endured beatings, stoning, shipwreck, and repeated imprisonment.

Reports indicate the subject was caught up to the third heaven and heard words that could not be told. A persistent affliction, described as a thorn in the flesh, was permitted to remain.

Having appealed to Caesar, the subject was conveyed to Rome. By tradition he was martyred there under Nero. His closing testimony records that he had fought the good fight and finished the race.
