What his wife said of his very name: FOLLY IS WITH HIM
How the LORD dealt with him at last: HIS HEART DIED, AND TEN DAYS LATER SO DID HE
The subject was a very rich man of Maon whose flocks were in Carmel, but he was harsh and badly behaved, while his wife Abigail was discerning and beautiful.
David, in the wilderness, had protected the subject's shepherds and flocks, and at shearing time sent young men to ask courteously for provisions. The subject railed at them, asking who David was, and sent them away empty.
David was angry and set out with four hundred men to destroy every male of his house. But Abigail, warned by a servant, hurried with generous gifts and a wise appeal, and turned David from bloodshed and vengeance.
The subject knew nothing of this, for he was holding a feast like a king and was very drunk. In the morning, when his wife told him, his heart died within him and he became like a stone.
About ten days later the LORD struck him and he died. David blessed the LORD for keeping him from evil and for returning the subject's folly on his own head, and afterward took Abigail as his wife.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Wealth without wisdom or gratitude is folly that ends in ruin.
- Harshness and pride blind a man to the kindness shown him.
- Vengeance is the Lord's; He repays the fool in His own time.
