The subject was commanded to go to Nineveh and cry against its wickedness. Instead he fled toward Tarshish by ship, seeking to escape the presence of the LORD.
A great storm arose, and the subject, knowing himself the cause, was cast into the sea at his own word. The sea grew calm, and the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow him.
For three days and three nights the subject was in the belly of the fish. He prayed from that distress, and the fish vomited him onto dry land. The word came a second time, and this time he went.
The subject proclaimed that in forty days Nineveh would be overthrown. The city, from the king down, repented in sackcloth, and God relented from the disaster he had threatened.
The subject was angry that the LORD had shown mercy. God appointed a plant to shade him and then a worm to wither it, teaching him to pity the great city he had begrudged.
