Why Samuel passed over the elder sons: THE LORD LOOKS ON THE HEART

Remarks:

The subject was the son of Obed and grandson of Boaz and Ruth, a man of Bethlehem in Judah with eight sons and flocks to keep.

When the LORD rejected Saul, He sent Samuel to the house of the subject to anoint a king from among his sons, telling the prophet to fill his horn with oil and go.

Samuel looked on Eliab and the elder sons, impressed by their height and bearing, but the LORD said He had rejected them, for man looks on the outward appearance while the LORD looks on the heart.

Seven sons passed before Samuel, and none was chosen. The subject was asked if these were all; the youngest, David, was keeping the sheep. He was sent for, and the LORD said, Arise, anoint him, for this is he.

So the subject's youngest son was anointed in the midst of his brothers. Later the prophet Isaiah named the coming Messiah a shoot from the stump of the subject, the root that would stand as a banner for the peoples.
