His warning to the raging council: LEAVE THESE MEN ALONE
The test he set for the movement: IF IT IS OF GOD YOU CANNOT STOP IT
The subject was a Pharisee and a teacher of the law, held in honor by all the people, of the school of Hillel, and the teacher at whose feet Saul of Tarsus was brought up.
When the apostles were arrested and the council was enraged, ready to put them to death for preaching the risen Christ, the subject stood up and ordered the men put outside for a while.
He reminded them of Theudas and of Judas the Galilean, who had drawn away followers, and who came to nothing once they were slain, their movements scattered.
So he counseled, Keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or undertaking is of men, it will fail, but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them, and you might even be found opposing God.
The council was persuaded, and after beating the apostles they let them go. His measured caution spared them, and his most famous pupil would soon meet the risen Lord and become the apostle Paul.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- What is merely of men will fail, but what is of God cannot be stopped.
- Wise restraint weighs a matter before rushing to condemn it.
- Beware, in opposing a movement, of being found to fight against God.
