What he was reading in his chariot: THE PROPHET ISAIAH, OF THE SUFFERING LAMB
His question that opened the gospel: HOW CAN I UNDERSTAND, UNLESS SOMEONE GUIDES ME?
The subject was a court official of great authority under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of all her treasure, who had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning home in his chariot.
An angel sent Philip to the desert road toward Gaza, and the Spirit told him to join the chariot. The subject was reading aloud from the prophet Isaiah, the passage of one led like a lamb to the slaughter.
Philip asked whether he understood what he read, and the subject answered, How can I, unless someone guides me? and invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
Beginning with that Scripture, Philip told him the good news of Jesus, the suffering Servant who was pierced for our transgressions.
Coming to some water, the subject asked what prevented him from being baptized; Philip baptized him, the Spirit carried Philip away, and the subject went on his way rejoicing, an early sign that the gospel was for the nations.
