What he claimed a spirit whispered to him: CAN A MORTAL BE RIGHTEOUS BEFORE GOD?
God's verdict on his speeches: YOU HAVE NOT SPOKEN RIGHTLY, AS MY SERVANT JOB
The subject was the Temanite, the eldest and first to speak of the three friends who came to sit with Job in his grief and then entered the great debate over his suffering.
He began gently, recalling how Job had strengthened others, but soon argued that the innocent do not perish, and that trouble is reaped by those who plow iniquity.
He appealed to a vision in the night, a spirit that made his hair stand up, asking whether a mortal could be righteous before God, and urged Job to seek God, who wounds but binds up.
As the debate hardened, he accused Job outright of great wickedness, imagining crimes of oppression and greed to explain his ruin, though none of it was true.
There was truth in his words about God's greatness and justice, but wrongly aimed at a righteous sufferer. At the end the LORD rebuked the subject and his companions for not speaking rightly of Him, and had them bring offerings while Job prayed for them, and the LORD accepted Job's prayer.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Even a true principle becomes a lie when forced onto the wrong case.
- Do not assume that a person's suffering measures their guilt.
- Confident spiritual experience is no substitute for speaking rightly of God.
