The LORD's warning before the deed: SIN IS CROUCHING AT THE DOOR
The ground's testimony against him: YOUR BROTHER'S BLOOD CRIES OUT
The subject was the firstborn of Adam and Eve, a tiller of the ground, while his brother Abel kept flocks. In the course of time each brought an offering to the LORD.
Abel brought the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions, and the LORD had regard for him and his offering; but for the subject and his offering of the fruit of the ground the LORD had no regard. The subject was very angry, and his face fell.
The LORD warned him: "Why are you angry? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; its desire is for you, but you must rule over it."
The subject spoke to his brother, and when they were in the field he rose up and killed him. When the LORD asked where Abel was, he answered, "Am I my brother's keeper?" But the voice of his brother's blood cried out from the ground.
The subject was cursed from the ground and made a fugitive and wanderer. Fearing he would be slain, he was given a mark of protection by the LORD, and went out from His presence to dwell in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
