How swift he was: AS SWIFT OF FOOT AS A WILD GAZELLE
How Abner struck him: WITH THE BUTT OF HIS SPEAR, IN THE BELLY
The subject was the youngest of the three sons of Zeruiah, David's sister, brother to Joab and Abishai, and one of David's mighty men. He was as swift of foot as a wild gazelle.
At the pool of Gibeon, when the men of David under Joab met the men of Ish-bosheth under Abner, the two sides fought, and Abner's men were beaten and fled.
The subject pursued Abner and would not turn aside to the right or the left. Abner warned him twice to turn away and take the spoil of a young soldier, unwilling to shed a brother's blood, but he refused.
So Abner struck him with the butt of his spear in the belly, and the spear came out his back, and he fell there and died. All who came to the place where he fell stood still.
His death set a blood feud between Joab and Abner that would not be quenched until Joab avenged him. The subject is remembered for his speed, his courage, and the deadly cost of a pursuit that would not relent.
