How he exalted himself: I WILL BE KING, WITH CHARIOTS AND HORSEMEN
The request that cost him his life: GIVE ME ABISHAG THE SHUNAMMITE AS WIFE
The subject, a son of David by Haggith and older than Solomon, exalted himself while his father was old and feeble, saying, I will be king, and got himself chariots, horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.
His father had never rebuked him, and he was very handsome. He drew in Joab the commander and Abiathar the priest, and held a feast at En-rogel, inviting the king's other sons but not Solomon, Nathan, or the mighty men.
Nathan and Bathsheba went to David, who swore that Solomon would reign. Solomon was anointed at Gihon amid great rejoicing, and when the sound reached En-rogel, the subject's guests scattered in fear.
The subject fled and grasped the horns of the altar, begging for his life. Solomon spared him on the condition that he prove worthy, and sent him home.
But afterward the subject asked, through Bathsheba, for Abishag the Shunammite, David's last attendant, to be his wife, a claim upon the royal house. Solomon saw in it another reach for the throne and had him put to death.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Self-exaltation grasps for what God has given to another, and falls.
- A child never lovingly corrected may grow into ruinous ambition.
- A spared rebel who will not repent only hastens his own end.
