Remarks:

The subject, grandson of Aaron, lived when Israel joined itself to the idolatry and immorality of Baal of Peor, and a plague broke out among the people.

When a man of Israel brazenly brought a Midianite woman into the camp before the weeping congregation, the subject rose, took a spear, and put an end to the defilement, and the plague was stayed.

The LORD declared that the subject had turned back His wrath because he was jealous with God's own jealousy for the honor of His name.

For this the LORD granted him a covenant of peace, and to him and his descendants a covenant of a perpetual priesthood.

The subject later served as priest in the conquest and the days of the judges, keeping the worship of Israel; the psalms remember that it was credited to him as righteousness.
