Who truly held his kingdom together: ABNER, THE COMMANDER OF THE ARMY
How his reign came to an end: TWO CAPTAINS SLEW HIM AS HE RESTED
The subject was a surviving son of Saul, set up as king over Israel at Mahanaim by Abner the commander after Saul and his other sons fell in battle, while David reigned over Judah at Hebron.
There was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David, but David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of the subject grew weaker and weaker.
The kingdom was held together not by the subject himself but by Abner. When the subject rashly accused Abner over one of Saul's concubines, Abner turned in anger to bring all Israel over to David.
After Abner was killed, the subject lost heart, and all Israel was troubled.
Two of his own captains, Rechab and Baanah, came into his house at noon and struck him down as he lay resting, cutting off his head and carrying it to David, thinking to please him. But David, who had never sought Saul's throne by blood, had them put to death for murdering an innocent man on his bed.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- A position held only by another's strength cannot long endure.
- Rash accusation can drive away the very support one depends on.
- God's promise, not human striving, decides who will finally stand.
